AN ACT TO CREATE A NEW SECTION TO BE CODIFIED AS SECTION 37-17-15, MISSISSIPPI CODE OF 1972, TO PROHIBIT EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS FAILING TO ACHIEVE CERTAIN ACCREDITATION LEVELS AND PERFORMANCE INDEX RATINGS UNDER THE PERFORMANCE-BASED ACCREDITATION SYSTEM; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. The following shall be codified as Section
37-17-15, Mississippi Code of 1972:
[Until July 1, 2002, this section will read as follows:]
37-17-15. Any school district that fails to meet Level 2 or higher accreditation requirements may not offer any extracurricular programs or activities, including athletics, band, chorus and any other activity deemed to be extracurricular by the State Department of Education, beginning with the commencement of the school year immediately following the assignment of an accreditation rating below Level 2 to the school district and until the district achieves an accreditation rating of Level 2 or higher.
[From and after July 1, 2002, this section will read as follows:]
37-17-15. Any school district that fails to achieve a 2.5 rating or higher under the performance index component of the performance-based accreditation system may not offer any extracurricular programs or activities, including athletics, band, chorus and any other activity deemed to be extracurricular by the State Department of Education, beginning with the commencement of the school year immediately following the assignment of a performance index rating below 2.5 to the school district and until the district achieves a performance index rating of 2.5 or higher.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 1999.
